First things first - please introduce yourself!
My name is Bill Drewnowski. I’m a dad, a teacher, a collector, and a podcaster. Growing up in the 80s I was a fan of the fantasy and sci-fi of the times, and eventually got into The Lord of the Rings in the 90s during high school and college. My collecting life started (also in the 90s) with Magic the Gathering, a game I still play to this day. I didn’t start collecting action figures (as an adult) until much later in life, mostly driven by the nostalgia of becoming a parent.
When did you discover Mythic Legions?
I can’t remember where I first heard of Mythic Legions, possibly the Action Figure Blues podcast, but I was familiar with it from the start. However I didn’t place my first pre-order until the Covenant of Shadow wave. My first figure was the Deluxe Knight.
Do you have any favorites kinds of Legions figure? A race or faction you prefer above the others?
Goblins are the race that got me to dive in more heavily with Legions. When the Advent of Decay kickstarter went up, it was the first time I ordered a bunch of Legions all in one shot. Prior to that it had been one here, one there. So Goblins are definitely a favorite of mine. I also enjoy the various barbarians and orcs. But most recently knights have hit the top of my list, particularly the 1.0 style knights in all their glorious variations.
One thing I know you love to do with Legions is “pop-and-swap” parts. What are some of your favorite creations you’ve made?
My current favorite LBC is taking the torso from Vorthogg and the limbs from the All Stars Templar to make a heavily armored knight. The parts match so well, it feels like it was meant to be. If we’re talking straight one-to-one swap, one of the best options in my opinion is to switch limbs from Draguul with those of the Fury Clan Orc; two figures in, two figures out. And both of those are still relatively easy to find in trade (or possibly the In Stock Sales).
What kinds of races or characters are high on your “wish list” for Mythic Legions?
The wizard, and there isn’t even a close second. Once the Horsemen announced that CJesim would be involved in their cloth goods design-work, sorcerer’s robes went straight to the top of my wishlist.
Outside of Legions, you also collect LOTS of other lines as well, correct?
Oh for sure. I was really big into Star Wars S.H. Figuarts, in fact SHF was the sole focus of the DorkLair podcast in its first couple years. Unfortunately that line has slowed way down and we are now approaching a full year since the last one was announced. I’m also big into Mezco. The DorkLair YouTube channel is popular among One:12 collectors, and I also maintain a comprehensive One:12 checklist at DorkLair.com. The Gomez/Rumble Society stuff has been phenomenal.
Lately, with the fading out of Star Wars SHF, I’ve been ramping up my Hot Toys collection. It’s been a lot of fun diving deeper into that line. Star Wars is my favorite fictional world, so it will always be central to my collecting. A few other lines I hunt and peck with are Movie Realization, Super7 Conan figures, some sixth scale Star Trek, and anything with a fantasy theme from Storm Collectibles, Vitruvian H.A.C.K.S., etc.
Tell us a little bit about your original content - Dorklair, podcasts, etc.
The DorkLair Collecting Podcast is a bi-monthly audio show with my co-hosts Chris and Larry. Each episode we discuss the recent action figure news and then do a focused review on one figure that all three of us have in hand. The DorkLair YouTube channel has become something I do more so when I have extra time, primarily action figure video reviews.
Looking forward, what kinds of new Mythic Legions are you most excited to hopefully get?
Now that the Horsemen have started creating 2.0 versions of characters like Artemyss and Volligar, I’m very curious to see what’s next. They can get super creative with the characters, like maybe some sort of fallen hero or deposed king. Imagine an “Attlus the Redeemed” in full glorious battle armor, or young Pixxus prior giving his life to save his brother. Stuff like that really sounds fun.
And Cosmic Legions? Do you expect to dive headfirst into that line as well? Are you already looking forward to some Mythic/Cosmic swaps?
I can’t wait for Cosmic Legions. They’ve done a good job of keeping it a secret, so it’s difficult to have expectations, but I imagine being able to create an alien in medieval armor or a skeletal cosmonaut. I definitely hope they make some robots or synths.
